Raw Feeds For Working Dogs

While raw feeds are suitable for the vast majority of dogs, we believe they are the best option for the majority of working dogs. Unlike most pets, working dogs are required to perform at high levels which are often physically and mentally demanding. Where roles are particularly physical, this translates as an increased demand for protein. While kibble and other more conventional processed feeds do meet baseline nutritional requirements, their protein content is often deliberately kept low to save manufacturing costs, with less healthy starchy and sugary ingredients being used as a “filler” to make it go further. In contrast with this, raw feeds are far “cleaner”, only containing healthy ingredients which offer real nutritional value.

Raw food’s high protein content supports muscle growth and maintenance in hard-working dogs. Where dogs earn their keep through physical efforts such as sports, shepherding, or protection work, it is vital that they are provided with a diet which meets or exceeds their protein requirements. Failure to do so can lead to muscle wastage, overall worse health and wellbeing, and ultimately a reduced ability to work.

While starches and carbohydrates can be beneficial to working dogs, “clean” options will always be better than processed alternatives. Dogs do not actually require much in the way of carbohydrates, so a little goes a long way. Starchy vegetables such as carrots and broccoli are both good choices we use in our feeds, and far healthier than processed grain-based starches.
